Following a Paper Trail to the i-Challenge Finals

Going by an estimate that it takes 24 trees to produce 1,000kg of newspaper, close to 1,000 trees may be spared the chain saw thanks to the efforts of Malaysian school students who accumulated more than 40,000kg of scrap paper within a month for recycling.

Driven by the desire to help curb environmental degradation, the students zealously embarked on a “paper chase” to qualify for i-Challenge, one of the most exciting and rewarding competitions organized by the INTI Education Group for secondary school students in Malaysia. Each participating school had to collect at least 1,000kg of paper for its representative team(s) to qualify for the finals of the competition.

“Proceeds from the sale of the scrap paper collected for recycling, amounting to RM10,000, went to the Malaysian Nature Society, in support of a national campaign known as ‘Save the Belum-Temengor Forest’,” said Eddy Choo, Chairman of the i-Challenge 2010 Organising Committee. “INTI has also embarked on an institution-wide signature drive that saw thousands of signatures collected from our entire student body.”

100 teams of students from 65 secondary schools across Malaysia, including Sabah and Sarawak, made it to the final round of i-Challenge 2010. Held at INTI International University in Putra Nilai, the finals incorporated exciting outdoor games that tested finalists’ knowledge on environment-saving initiatives. The best eight teams then competed in a challenge to transform recyclable garbage into a useful item, for the top three spots in the competition. More than RM100,000 in prizes was awarded, and this included scholarships, cash and prizes in kind for students, teachers and schools.

SMK Gajah Berang, Melaka; SMJK Yu Hua, Kajang; and SMK Alor Akar, Pahang emerged Champion, First Runner-Up and Second Runner-Up respectively. Consolation prizes went to SM Stella Maris; SMJK Union, Penang; and SMK Sri Tebrau, Johor Bahru.

Sponsored by The Body Shop and organized in partnership with the Malaysian Nature Society, i-Challenge is an annual competition first held in 2005 with the aim of promoting and instilling social responsibility among students, and to provide an opportunity for them to contribute to the betterment of society and the environment. It serves as a platform for them to learn effectively by thinking and acting creatively. Participants are expected to cultivate a positive, innovative and creative attitude while having good fun.
