14 DISTED College students gained wider exposure to the business, industrial and cultural settings in Taiwan during a field learning trip recently.

The 8-day educational tour was organised by the college’s Student Representative Council (SRC) in collaboration with Taiwan's Oriental Institute of Technology (OIT).

“During factory visits, we had the opportunity to take a closer look at the thriving industrial landscape and working environment in Taiwan,” said Dicky Lim Wei Ming, a business degree student.

“We enriched our learning experience about global enterprises when we visited telecommunications company Far EasTone, and the SHEICO Group which develops and produces neoprene rubber sheets and finished goods,” said the group leader.

“The study tour also included a lively programme of exposure to Taiwan’s rich heritage, culture and places of interest,” said Dicky Lim, who is the SRC senior vice-president.

Accompanying the students were DISTED president Dr Koo Wee Kor, School of Business head Dr Liew Yueah Cin, student affairs officer Tony Toh Chi Eng, marketing officer Paulyn Yuen and lecturer Tan Siew Gaik.

“Our study trip was also to reciprocate the educational outing to Penang by OIT students, which they had done for the last 3 years,” said Tony Toh.

“As the world is fast becoming a global village, we like to broaden our students’ international outlook through exposure to foreign living and work cultures,” he said.

The students gained deeper insights into Taiwanese society and lifestyle.

Melissa Ng Mei Zhen noted: “For the first time, I realised that Taiwanese people seem to prefer tidbits and snacks over regular meals.”

“It gave me a good awakening to see the traffic flow there is opposite to that in our country. As Taipei is densely populated, its traffic is extremely chaotic,” she said.
