Beach clean-up

DISTED College students did their bit in addressing a key pollution problem threatening our beaches and oceans - thrash.

41 students took part in the beach and coastal clean-up campaign recently, which was organised by the Penang state government in conjunction with the World Earth Day.

“The students collected rubbish for about an hour along 1.5 km, from near The Ship to the Park Royal Hotel, on the Batu Ferringhi coastal stretch.

“They removed 36kg of trash and debris along the beach with cigar tips, plastics and Styrofoam forming the bulk of it.

“We take pride in the fact that DISTED was the largest private college participant in the Earth Day 2010 Coastal Clean-up Campaign,” said the college’s student affairs officer Tony Toh Chi Eng.

“Clean and beautiful beaches are a boon to tourism in Penang,” he added.

The clean-up participants included Student Representative Council president Amy Lim Hui Ying and senior vice-president Dicky Lim Wei Ming.

“Thrash is not just an eye-sore. It harms marine life, undermines tourism and poses a risk to human health,” said Amy.

“The beach clean-up was a good way to educate and encourage people to properly dispose thrash and be eco-friendly,” she said.

Dicky Lim added: “Rubbish doesn’t fall from the sky but from our hands. So, rubbish on our beaches is preventable with the right environmental attitude and action.”

“Let’s say ‘Yes’ to cleanliness and act to stop the tide of coastal thrash,” he said.
